  Born on 12 october in Edo (modern Tokyo) in 1760 Hokusai was a versatile artist and one of the greatest masters of the japanese print. Apprenticed to the *ukiyo-e master Shunsho he abandoned traditional styles of engraving for the colored woodcut design of the ukiyo-e school. He later studied with various painters, his 10 volumes of the Mangwa (1814-1819 - Sketches at Random) depict most facets of Japanese life. Numerous commissions for book illustrations, portraits of women - his work covered the whole spectrum of ukiyo-e art - individual prints, picture books, books of anecdote, illustrations of verse and historical romances, erotic books, paintings and sketches. He is best known for his "Hundred Views of Mount Fuji" of 1835. And brought a greatness to ukio-e raising landscape, flower and bird painting to the status of independent genres. Bold color combinations, a diversity of themes, his work reflects the world of the imagination of the Far East.
