Mies van der Rohe the architect and designer was born in Aachen Germany, the son of a stonecutter who eventually worked in the Berlin office of Peter Behrens with other pioneers of International Style architecture..  Pioneer of glass skyscrapers he designed the German Pavilion for the Barcelona International Exposition of 1929.   Notable for his tubular steel furniture, especially the Barcelona Chair, two glass apartment towers in on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago,   the Seagram Building in New York and the Public Library in Washington DC. Mies was the last director of the Bauhaus from 1930, before the Nazis shut it down in 1933.
