Dame Clara Butt was born in Southwick, West Sussex and made her Royal Albert
Hall debut in 1892. She was known for her performances of
oratorios, and premiered Elgar's Sea Pictures which was written for
her in 1899. In 1914 she was made a Dame Commander of the Order
of the British Empire. She was very tall with a large and resonant
contralto voice - Sir Thomas Beecham said of her:
"On a clear day, you could have heard her across the English Channel"
