Cellist Casals was born in Vendrell, Spain in 1876 and studied at the Royal Conservatory Madrid. He made his debut in Barcelona in 1891, at the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 he went into exile refusing to play the cello as a demonstration against General Franco's dictatorship. In 1950 with the bicentenary of Bach's death he came out of exile performing the Bach Cello Suites. After his years of silence he performed for peace and nuclear disarmament
