Jazz pianist and composer Hoagy was born in Bloomington and whilst at Indiana University was influenced by jazz musicians notably Bix Beiderbecke.
He wrote many compositions notably Stardust (1927) and in 1951 he won an Oscar for In the Cool Cool Cool of the Evening
