The Clarinet was invented in the early 18th century
by the famous woodwind makers Denner of Nuremberg. It was the
first reed-blown instrument with a cylindrical rather than a conical
bore, made of boxwood these first clarinets were pitched in C
and had six finger-holes and two keys. A third key was added to
extend the range and make possible the B at the break. The body
was divided into three sections, which allowed interchangeable
joints of different length to faciliate playing in different keys.
Around 1750 the fourth and fifth keys were added and the foot
joint expanded into a bell. In 1760 a sixth key invented by Jean
Lefevre was added to give an additional C # and G#. In 1809 Iwan
Muller brought out a prototype of his 13 keyed model pitched in
Bb which was to become the standard instrument for the next 100
years. Muller published a tutor in 1826. The final major modification
occurred between 1839 and 1843 when Hyacinthe Eleonore Klose collaborated
with the instrument maker Louis-August Buffet to simplify the
fingering system, using the ring-keys Boehm had developed for
his flutes.
