Theobald Boehm 1794-1881
introduced a large-holed instrument which overcame the acoustic
deficiencies of earlier flutes. In the 1890's Boehm invented the
alto flute, a fourth lower than the concert flute which is adapted
to let the player reach the more widely spaced holes. The Piccolo
it pitched in C an octave higher than the concert flute and half
its size. Listen for it in Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony. The Bass
flute is pitched an octave below the concert flute, its headjoint
being curved to make it manageable.
Notable works for flute include:
Ravel Daphnis et Chloe
Stravinsky The Rite of Spring

Introduction to flute acoustics is just that, and a good place
to start. If you can't remember much about sound, try the introduction
of How do woodwind instruments work? If you strike a term or idea
you don't know, try the Basics list on the navigation bar.
Data for each note: Acoustic response, Spectra, Sound files and
Fingering has been
measured on several types of flute, for standard fingerings, some
non-standard and some multiphonics. The acoustic response tells
us how easily the flute responds to every frequency. For explanations,
see What is acoustic response and why is it important? See
also What is a sound spectrum?
