The Modern Guitar appeared in the 18^th century, and was a six string instrument with a wooden resonating chamber, incurved sidewalls and a flat back. Famous makers included Jose Pages of Cadiz, Rene Francois Lacote of Paris and Lewis Panormo of London. 19^th century improvements included broadening the body and changing the internal bracing to a fan shape, fitting fixed metal frets to the neck, andraising the bridge. During the 20^th century the fingerboard was lengthened down to the sound hole.
