The modern harp has 46 strings and a compass of six and a half octaves. Jacob Hochbrucker of Donauworth and Johann Vetter of Nuremberg invented the pedal harp in about 1720 - the first pedal harps having five pedals which meant that when you depressed one of the pedals all the strings of one note were raised by a semitone. The number of pedals was eventually increased to seven, one for each note of the scale. Further improvements were made in the late 18th century by Cousineau and Erard .
