The Trombone was invented in the mid 15th century, its first name was the trompette-saicqueboute. In England it was called the sackbutt, Italy the trombone and in Germany the Posaune. Beethoven was first classical composer to use trombones regularly, using it for the first time in his fifth symphony. By the 17th century trombones were being manufactured in 3 sizes, alto in F, tenor in Bb and bass in Eb. The valved trombone was first produced in Vienna in about 1818 and the Bb and F trombone was introduced in 1839 by the Leipzig instrument maker C F Sattler. Todays trombone is made with 3 bores: France prefers a narrow bore, England a medium and USA and Germany a wide bore. The wider the bore the warmer and richer the sound

Notable works for trombone include:
Bent Sorensen's trombone concerto
