Author A.A.Milne set the Pooh stories in Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, easily reached from London. Winnie the Pooh was first published 75 years ago, the adventures of Winnie being written by A.A. Milne for his son Christopher Robin. Illustrated by E.H. Shepherd, Walt Disney bought the film rights in 1960 and introduced Winnie to a much wider audience. Winnie was a black bear which was given to the London Zoo by Lieutenant Harry Colebourn, a Veterinary Surgeon in the Canadian force. Colebourn bought the black bear cub for $20 from a trapper in Ontario and named her Winnipeg after his home town. Winnie became his regiments mascot and went with him to England. Left with the London Zoo when his regiment was sent to the front she remained there until her death in 1934.
